Business Development Manager

  • Position: Business Development Manager – International Dispute Resolution (IDR)
  • Location: 1001 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, Washington, DC 20004, USA
  • Type: Full-time with a hybrid schedule (3 days remote, 2 days in-office – Tuesday through Thursday)
  • Interview Schedule: Initial call with Lauren Meyers; Interviews with Aileen Hinsch, Ezra Crawford, Maura Brandt, RP Sagner, and Liz Tumminia; Meetings with partners (TBD).
  • Reporting Structure: Initially to Ezra Crawford, Senior BD Director, later transitioning to Aileen Hinsch, BD Director
  • Compensation Expectation: $140,000 – $160,000 (DOE)

Job Summary:

  • Role: Business Development Manager supporting the IDR Practice Group and other responsibilities within the Litigation Department.
  • Reporting: Reports to a Business Development Director.
  • Collaboration: Works closely with Marketing Department, including business development, communications, and marketing teams.

Primary Areas of Responsibility:

Business Development and Marketing:

  • Develops and implements strategic plans and initiatives in collaboration with leaders.
  • Engages with practice groups and attorneys to understand legal and business needs.
  • Drives business development goals, identifies leads, expands client matters, and pursues cross-selling opportunities.
  • Develops pitches, proposals, and responds to formal RFPs.
  • Conducts research on clients, competitors, and industry trends.
  • Creates marketing collateral, website descriptions, and client-facing materials.
  • Supports brand awareness through sponsored events, presentations, speaking opportunities, alerts, and articles.
  • Monitors and reports on the progress of ongoing business development efforts.

Practice Group Operations:

  • Sets agendas for practice group, steering committee, and working group meetings.
  • Contributes to the development of agendas and BD components for special group meetings.
  • Manages the practice group’s annual business development budget.
  • Supports lateral integration efforts.


  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    • Demonstrated ability to build strong working relationships.
    • Adaptability and effective communication skills.
    • Experience in content creation and messaging development.
    • Strong business and marketing acumen.
    • Knowledge of legal and business environments.
  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree required; JD, MBA, or other advanced degree may substitute for experience.

  • Experience: Minimum of five (5) years of directly related experience. Experience in intellectual property practice in a law firm environment preferred. Project management experience is an asset.
