Position Overview:
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Controller to oversee the financial operations of our nonprofit organization. This role requires a comprehensive understanding of full-cycle accounting, payroll management, budgeting, and financial reporting within the nonprofit sector. The ideal candidate will have a passion for nonprofit missions and possess the expertise to manage and maintain the financial health of our organization in compliance with 501(c)(3) regulations.

Key Responsibilities:

Full-Cycle Accounting:

Oversee and manage all accounting functions including accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, and monthly reconciliations.

Ensure accurate and timely month-end and year-end closings.

Prepare financial statements, including balance sheets, profit and loss, and statement of activities.

Maintain compliance with accounting principles (GAAP) and nonprofit-specific regulations.

Payroll Administration:

Manage payroll processing, ensuring timely and accurate compensation for all employees.

Oversee payroll tax filings, deductions, and benefits administration.

Prepare and submit quarterly and annual payroll tax returns.

Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local payroll regulations.

Budgeting & Financial Planning:

Lead the budgeting process, working closely with department heads and the Executive Director to create and manage the annual budget.

Monitor actual expenses and revenues against the budget and provide variance analysis.

Assist with long-term financial planning, ensuring alignment with the organization’s strategic goals.

Audit & Compliance:

Assist with the preparation and coordination of annual audits, working closely with external auditors to provide necessary documentation.

Ensure compliance with IRS 501(c)(3) regulations and all applicable federal, state, and local laws.

Develop and maintain internal control policies and procedures to safeguard assets.

Financial Reporting & Analysis:

Prepare and present regular financial reports to the Executive Director, Board of Directors, and other stakeholders.

Analyze financial data and trends to provide actionable insights that support decision-making.

Support grant management and reporting requirements, ensuring compliance with funders’ guidelines.

Team Collaboration & Leadership:

Manage and mentor a small team of accounting staff, providing training, guidance, and performance evaluations.

Work closely with other departments to ensure smooth financial operations and address any concerns or questions regarding financial matters.

Stay up-to-date with nonprofit accounting best practices and regulatory changes.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (CPA or CMA preferred).

Minimum of 5 years of accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a nonprofit environment.

Strong knowledge of full-cycle accounting, payroll, budgeting, and financial reporting.

Experience with nonprofit financial management, including compliance with 501(c)(3) regulations.

Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Microsoft Dynamics, or similar) and Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel.

Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain financial concepts to non-financial stakeholders.

Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
