Laars Heating Systems is seeking an experienced Engineering Lab Manager.  Laars’ Engineering Lab is a hub of activity for all new product development and provides support for sustaining engineering in terms of periodic product audits and recertification testing. The Laboratory Manager oversees all aspects of the lab, including but not limited to: maintenance and periodic calibration of all instruments/ data acquisition equipment, activities and professional development of technicians, training of technicians and ordering of supplies needed to ensure smooth operation.

Technician (Talent) Management:

  • Oversee and enforce protocols for lab operations
  • Stay informed of development projects; preemptively recognize resource needs
  • Participate in project scheduling and design team reviews
  • Provide leadership and daily management of Lab Technicians in alignment with individual Technician’s level rating and project work requirements
  • Develop and monitor performance metrics; Deploy SMART goals for all Lab Technicians
  • Collaborate with Engineers for project resourcing and accountability
  • Ensure employees are properly trained and instructed, and following applicable company and industry safety standards and regulations for all equipment in the lab
  • Maintain/modify and create new training programs as conditions indicate
  • Ensure consistent practices in equipment testing, data collection and recording among all Lab Technicians
  • Develop and maintain SOP documents for Lab Technician training and testing protocols
  • Maintain and adapt where necessary the documentation pertaining to Lab Technician professional level evaluations and conduct periodic level assessments for professional development purposes.

Lab Operations & Instrumentation:

  • Coordinate daily activities with Engineering personnel and proactively plan for all resource usage
  • Foster constructive, cross-functional relationships between Manufacturing, Quality, Sales and Engineering Departments; negotiate and resolve conflicts
  • Review and propose jointly with Engineering personnel opportunities for efficiency gains and structural improvement in Lab operation and performance; develop proposals for capital improvement plans as part of the annual budget process
  • Organize and archive all test data files and reports of daily and weekly activities
  • Schedule, coordinate and monitor 3rd party agency in-house and external testing and regulatory audit testing for new and sustaining engineering projects
  • Ensure that all instrumentation, equipment and consumables are fully stocked and available when needed, correctly calibrated and maintained; advising of any conflicts (and propose resolutions)
  • Participate on Safety Team and continuously review safety issues in the Lab.  Initiate solutions as recommended

Certification Systems Management:

  • Be familiar with regulatory requirements specific to our lab and product certifications (e.g. AHRI, CSA, ASME, ISO17025 as applicable)
  • Participate in industry trade groups
  • Collaborate with Bradford White lab management to cooperate in joint efforts  
  • Monitor industry changes to certification standards and related equipment test procedures
  • Maintain written test procedures as required by agency certifications
  • Anticipation and provision of documentation associated with agency visits

Education & Experience:

  • BS in Engineering discipline required from an accredited university
  • Minimum 3 years managing skilled technical employees required


  • Strong organizational skills, both for record retention and human resources
  • Demonstrated sound decision-making skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Support corporate philosophies and procedures
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. occasionally
