Histology/Path Lab Technician – Dermatology

This is a gap year program for folks applying to med school. It is a requirement for all candidates to at minimum have Medical Assistant experience in order to be considered. 
If not, they will be asked to interview as an MA and work in the surgical suite to gain experience to then grow into the role. 

Location: Portsmouth, New Hampshire
*Must be open to float between Exeter and Portsmouth offices as needed.
Temp Pay: $30 – $35, with prior experience
Schedule: 7-5p Monday to Friday

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required
  • Associate’s Degree in science related field is preferred.
  • HT/L ASCP certification or completion of Histology Technician training course and eligible to sit for the exam is required. 
    • Certification required within 1 year of hire.
  • Will accept a candidate with a BA Science
    • Must have 24 science credits
    • Will need to pull transcripts to ensure they can be cleared
  • Path lab/pathology experience
  • 2-4 years of experience in the field or in a related area is preferred.
  • Ability to differentiate between all colors is required
  • Prior surgical experience preferred
  • MOHS experience highly preferred but not required

Essential Duties:

  • Prepares microscopic slides for patient diagnosis to include: tissue processing, embedding and tissue orientation, sectioning of tissue blocks with preparation of microscopic slides, staining and submission of slides to Pathologist for diagnosis and reporting
  • Performs procedures within the scope of practice for a Histotechnician to include special staining procedures, immunohistochemistry and various other special procedures.
  • Strives to meet established parameters such as departmental turnaround time
  • Utilizes the Laboratory Information System for processing and tracking, printing slide labels, ordering stains, and a variety of QA and reporting functions.
  • Monitors inventory of the department and routinely restocks supplies and alerts leadership of the need for reordering.
  • Maintains laboratory records and documentation as required by laboratory procedures and/or hospital record retention policies.
  • Follows the chemical and recycling program
  • Follows established safety and biohazard procedures and standard precautions at all times. Disposes biohazardous wastes following laboratory protocols.
  • Quality Assurance: Ensure compliance with quality control policies and procedures to ensure that all aspects of laboratory operation are performed in accordance with accepted standards and applicable laws for clinical laboratories.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
