Site Nurse Manager

Schedule: 40 hours/week; Mon-Fri and potentially an evening shift on Mondays
Hours of Operation: 
Monday 8:30am-7pm
Tuesday-Friday 8:30am-5pm 
Job Responsibilities and Performance Standards:

  • Has a working knowledge of telephone triage.
  • Assesses the nursing staff’s ability to make sound decisions based on tools available and good nursing judgment as well as their ability to document their findings and advice in the patient’s medical record.
  • Has excellent assessment skills and is able to train nursing in triaging walk-in patients.
  • Recognizes, assesses and takes immediate action in acute and crisis situations, both patient and environmental.
  • Demonstrates ability to think clearly and arrive at sound conclusions.
  • Assesses the staff nurses’ ability to safely administer and accurately documents immunizations and medications.
  • Provides training as needed. Is able to assist/train on nursing procedures including IV insertion.
  • Is knowledgeable about Health Center policies and procedures.
  • Is aware and follows OSHA standards, including those for Blood Borne Pathogens, at all times. Identifies potential safety hazards and takes action to remedy these situations.
  • Uses organizational skills to complete assigned work effectively. Is able to assist other staff as needed.
  • Oversees the provision of patient education, both written and verbal, and the documentation of it as well as the patient/family response to the education.
  • Communicates effectively with patients, peers, site operations manager, and all other members of the health care team.
  • Listens and responds to verbal and non-verbal communication of patients, families and staff members. Relates to patients in a non-judgmental and caring manner.
  • Makes suggestions for improvement of patient care or staff development.
  • Functions as a team member in providing care to patient and families.
  • Accepts responsibility, is self-directed in developing and maintaining own level of competency, career development and education.
  • Demonstrates flexibility and adaptability in role as nursing supervisor. Serves as role model for nursing staff.
  • Supervises nursing staff to ensure provision of quality patient care.
  • Monitors and evaluates nursing practice to assure that patient care service is delivered according to established standards, including state and federal regulations.
  • Is able to handle patient concerns/complaints with courtesy.
  • Recognizes and requests assistance when appropriate.
  • Collaborates with site operations manager in communicating to the nursing staff issues concerning patient care and departmental issues, including collection and dissemination of information.
  • Works with nursing staff to implement policies, procedures and standards which minimize and eliminate patient care/work flow problems.
  • Understands the guidelines defined by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health Immunization Program/Vaccines For Children (VFC).
  • Works collaboratively with the Vaccine Manager/Coordinator and staff nurses to review and sign Standard Operating Procedure for Vaccine Management yearly.
  • Complies with organizations standards for storage and handling of vaccines, including being assigned as a primary responder for medication refrigerator/freezer alarms.
  • Collaborates with site operations manager on interviewing and hiring of personnel.
  • Develops and updates job description to reflect key responsibilities of each position.
  • Has primary responsibility for orienting new clinical staff. Monitors compliance with clinical performance standards.
  • Co-writes evaluations on nursing staff with Site Operations Manager/Director.
  • Participates in ongoing quality assurance programs to ensure that quality, safety and appropriateness of services are evaluated, monitored and appropriate actions taken.
  • Participates in evaluating strategies which improve patient care and departmental services.
  • Is seen as a leader in initiating and evaluating strategies which improve patient care and service.
  • Collaborates with the Site Operations Manager/Director in reviewing incident reports and complaints to assess trends and risk factors.
  • Takes action to correct same and educate staff accordingly.
  • Takes immediate action to resolve unusual incidents and assure that an incident report is completed.
  • Prevents incidents from happening by taking an active role.
  • Follows up on all incident reports and takes necessary action to educate staff in a timely manner.
  • Oversees the ordering of medical equipment and supplies.
  • Monitors and maintains medical closet.
  • In collaboration with site operations manager, develops relationships with community agencies as appropriate for clinic site, e.g., DPH, DCF DSS, VNA, schools, etc.
  • On a regular basis participates in ongoing quality improvement activities related to individual, team, and organizational performance improvement, as well as other committees as assigned.
  • Travel between sites may be required.
  • Performs all and any additional duties as assigned.
