Job Summary:
The Healthcare Accountant will be responsible for managing financial records and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards specific to the healthcare industry. This role will focus on healthcare-related accounting activities including billing, reimbursement, audits, and financial reporting. The Healthcare Accountant will collaborate with healthcare managers, CFOs, and other professionals to maintain accurate financial documentation, analyze financial data, and assist in budgeting processes to improve organizational financial health.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Financial Reporting and Analysis:

    • Prepare and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for the healthcare organization.
    • Ensure accurate accounting for revenue, expenses, and liabilities, including proper recognition of income from insurance companies and government payers (e.g., Medicare, Medicaid).
    • Monitor and review financial statements for discrepancies or issues related to billing, reimbursements, and cost reporting.
  2. Billing and Reimbursement Management:

    • Oversee patient billing and insurance claims processes, ensuring accurate and timely submissions.
    • Work with third-party payers to resolve payment discrepancies and ensure maximum reimbursement for services rendered.
    • Ensure compliance with healthcare reimbursement policies and regulations (e.g., CMS, HIPAA, ACA).
  3. Cost Management:

    • Assist in the preparation and analysis of departmental budgets and forecasts.
    • Track and analyze costs of medical supplies, services, and equipment, identifying areas for cost savings or efficiency improvements.
    • Perform variance analysis to assess financial performance and report any concerns to senior management.
  4. Compliance and Auditing:

    • Ensure compliance with all federal and state regulations regarding healthcare finance, including tax laws, reimbursement regulations, and accounting principles (GAAP).
    • Participate in internal and external audits, ensuring timely and accurate preparation of required financial documentation.
    • Monitor for changes in healthcare regulations and advise the team on any impacts to financial practices or reporting requirements.
  5. Accounts Payable and Receivable:

    • Oversee the management of accounts payable (AP) and accounts receivable (AR), ensuring timely and accurate processing of payments and collections.
    • Reconcile patient accounts and resolve billing disputes, including working with medical staff to clarify discrepancies.
  6. Financial System Management:

    • Maintain the organization’s financial records using accounting software and tools designed for the healthcare industry (e.g., Epic, Cerner, or other ERP systems).
    • Assist in the implementation of new accounting technologies or tools to improve financial reporting and operations.
  7. Collaboration and Communication:

    • Work closely with healthcare providers, administrators, and other departments to ensure accurate accounting practices are followed.
    • Provide financial insights and recommendations to leadership teams on improving financial performance.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (Master’s preferred).
  • Certification as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Management Accountant (CMA) is a plus.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of accounting experience, preferably in a healthcare setting (hospital, clinic, insurance company, or medical practice).
  • Strong knowledge of healthcare financial regulations, billing systems, and reimbursement methodologies (Medicare, Medicaid, private insurance).
  • Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Excel; experience with healthcare-specific financial systems is highly desirable.
  • In-depth understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Excellent attention to detail, analytical skills, and the ability to communicate financial information clearly.
