About the Role

The Controller is a key leader within the finance team, reporting directly to the CFO. This newly created role will oversee all accounting operations, financial reporting, and compliance functions. The ideal candidate is a skilled accounting professional with nonprofit or public accounting experience, supervisory expertise, and a passion for advancing organizational excellence.


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and mentor the accounting and finance team, fostering an inclusive and engaging workplace culture.
  • Oversee all accounting activities, including payroll, accounts payable/receivable, and financial reporting.
  • Prepare accurate and timely financial reports for stakeholders, including interim and annual reporting.
  • Manage the annual budget process and ensure timely financial reporting for grants and foundations.
  • Supervise organizational audits and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local reporting requirements.
  • Enhance and expand accounting software capabilities to support detailed program reporting and analysis.
  • Develop and maintain cash flow projections to meet operational needs.
  • Implement and maintain strong internal controls, risk mitigation strategies, and document retention policies.
  • Build and maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders, emphasizing problem-solving and responsiveness.
  • Assist with special projects and contribute to the organization’s growth and success.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field (CPA preferred but not required).
  • 5+ years of progressive experience in accounting/finance, preferably in a nonprofit organization or public accounting with nonprofit clients.
  • Proven supervisory experience with a focus on mentoring and creating a positive team environment.
  • Proficiency with fund accounting software, including grant accounting and reporting.
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to operate strategically and hands-on.
  • Exceptional communication and leadership skills with a focus on integrity and trust.
  • Proactive problem-solver with the ability to build collaborative relationships across the organization.
