Key Responsibilities:

  • Financial Management:

  • Oversee all day-to-day accounting functions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger.
  • Prepare and manage monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, ensuring compliance with GAAP and the school’s financial policies.
  • Provide timely and accurate financial reporting to the school’s leadership and Board of Trustees.
  • Audit Coordination:

  • Lead and manage the external audit process, including preparation of financial statements and necessary schedules.
  • Work closely with auditors to ensure a smooth audit process, resolving any issues and providing requested documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements and tax filings, including IRS Form 990, and applicable state/local filings.
  • Grant and Gift Accounting:

  • Oversee the proper tracking and accounting of grants, donations, and other gifts, ensuring compliance with donor restrictions and grant agreements.
  • Prepare and submit financial reports for grantors, foundations, and donors, ensuring accuracy and timely delivery.
  • Collaborate with the development team to track, report, and ensure proper stewardship of restricted and unrestricted gifts.
  • Budgeting and Forecasting:

  • Assist in the development of the school’s annual budget, collaborating with department heads and school leadership to ensure alignment with financial goals.
  • Monitor budget performance, identifying variances and providing recommendations for corrective actions.
  • Internal Controls and Compliance:

  • Ensure the integrity of financial systems and internal controls to prevent fraud and ensure operational efficiency.
  • Develop and implement best practices for financial processes and procedures.
  • Other Duties:

  • Supervise accounting staff, providing guidance and professional development.
  • Participate in the preparation and presentation of financial reports to the school’s Board of Trustees, as required.
  • Handle ad hoc financial analysis or projects as needed.

    Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (CPA preferred).
    • Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in accounting or finance, with a strong focus on audit and grant/gift accounting, preferably in the nonprofit or educational sector.
    • In-depth knowledge of GAAP, audit processes, and financial reporting.
    • Familiarity with financial software systems (e.g., QuickBooks, Blackbaud, or similar platforms).
    • Strong knowledge of fund accounting and experience managing restricted funds, grants, and endowments.
    • Ability to interpret and apply IRS and state regulations related to tax-exempt organizations and nonprofit financial management.
    • Excellent organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
    • High attention to detail and a strong commitment to accuracy and compliance.
