Staff Accountant

Job Summary: We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Staff Accountant with a strong background in nonprofit financial management and state grant compliance. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience in managing financial transactions for a nonprofit organization, including the preparation of financial reports, maintaining ledgers, ensuring compliance with GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles), and supporting state grant funding requirements. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is passionate about nonprofit work and has the technical skills to ensure financial integrity and transparency.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Financial Reporting: Prepare, analyze, and maintain accurate and timely financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
  • Grant Management: Assist in the administration and tracking of state and federal grants, ensuring compliance with grant guidelines and reporting requirements.
  • Account Reconciliation: Perform monthly bank and general ledger reconciliations to ensure accuracy and consistency.
  • Budgeting & Forecasting: Support the development and tracking of the organization’s budget, and provide financial projections as needed.
  • Accounts Payable/Receivable: Process and track accounts payable and receivable, ensuring all transactions are accurately recorded and payments are processed on time.
  • Audit Preparation: Assist in preparing for annual audits, ensuring all required documentation and reports are readily available for auditors.
  • Compliance & Regulatory Reporting: Ensure all financial activities adhere to federal, state, and local regulations, particularly those related to state grants.
  • Financial Analysis: Provide ad-hoc financial analysis and reporting as needed to support program managers and leadership.
  • Recordkeeping & Documentation: Maintain organized and accurate records of financial transactions, grant documentation, and supporting schedules.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • 2+ years of experience in nonprofit accounting, with a preference for state grant accounting experience.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles).
  • Experience with grant reporting and compliance, particularly state and federal grants.
  • Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage, or similar), and Microsoft Excel.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of nonprofit tax-exempt regulations and 501(c)(3) reporting requirements.
  • Experience working with a nonprofit organization’s financial policies and procedures.
  • CPA or pursuing CPA certification is a plus.
