Responsibilities:
The Controller serves as the agency’s accounting expert, overseeing financial statements, cash management, and all accounting functions. Under the direction of the CFO, the Controller ensures the integrity of financial reporting, maintains robust internal controls, and serves as the primary liaison with external auditors, banks, and financial partners. Ensures compliance with GAAP, state, and federal regulations while driving process efficiencies.
- Accounting
- Oversee all accounting operations, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and adherence to GAAP.
- Maintain the General Ledger and manage the monthly close process, including reconciliations and journal entries.
- Ensure timely reconciliation of all accounts and ledgers.
- Lead the year-end financial audit process, ensuring smooth execution and compliance with reporting requirements.
- Manage and ensure compliance with local, state, and federal government reporting and tax filings.
- Oversee accurate preparation and submission of the Uniform Financial Report (UFR) required for human and social service organizations in Massachusetts.
- Supervise accounts receivable (billing and cash receipts) and accounts payable operations, implementing automation and process improvements.
- Process payroll and related files, ensuring accurate integration between the HRIS and accounting system.
- Monitor daily cash flow to ensure sufficient liquidity for operational needs.
- Maintain and track fixed assets, ensuring accurate depreciation schedules.
- Implement and enforce strong internal controls over financial transactions and reporting systems to meet GAAP and contractual/regulatory standards.
- Contracts and Grant Management
- Oversee the process of securing and updating 50+ contracts, primarily with the MA Department of Development Services (DDS), and MA Department of Mental Health (DMH).
- Ensure accurate and timely monthly billing, financial tracking, and reporting for all contracts.
- Work collaboratively with program and administrative teams to optimize financial reporting and contract compliance.
- Representative Payee Services
- Supervise the financial management of Representative Payee services for approximately 150 clients, ensuring compliance with Social Security Administration (SSA) regulations.
- Leadership & Department Management
- Lead, mentor and develop a team of 6 accounting professionals.
- Foster a responsive service-oriented department that supports the agency’s complex range of programs.
- Promote continuous process improvement, automation and efficiency in accounting functions.
REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required, CPA or CMA preferred
- 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including 5+ years in a supervisory role
- Strong technical accounting skills with experience in financial operations and systems management
- Nonprofit and/or human service sector experience preferred
- High proficiency with accounting systems (Acumatica preferred) and other technology tools, including Excel, Teams, SharePoint, and software that enhances automation and efficiency.
- Proven ability to automate and streamline accounting functions for efficiency.
- Experience with general ledger management and month-end/year-end closing processes.
- Familiarity with Massachusetts Executive Office of Health and Human Services (EOHHS) contracts, UFR reporting, and EIM billing preferred
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Ability to collaborate, integrate different viewpoints, and exercise sound judgment.
