Position Overview:
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Controller to oversee the financial operations of our nonprofit organization. This role requires a comprehensive understanding of full-cycle accounting, payroll management, budgeting, and financial reporting within the nonprofit sector. The ideal candidate will have a passion for nonprofit missions and possess the expertise to manage and maintain the financial health of our organization in compliance with 501(c)(3) regulations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Full-Cycle Accounting:

    • Oversee and manage all accounting functions including accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, and monthly reconciliations.

    • Ensure accurate and timely month-end and year-end closings.

    • Prepare financial statements, including balance sheets, profit and loss, and statement of activities.

    • Maintain compliance with accounting principles (GAAP) and nonprofit-specific regulations.

  • Payroll Administration:

    • Manage payroll processing, ensuring timely and accurate compensation for all employees.

    • Oversee payroll tax filings, deductions, and benefits administration.

    • Prepare and submit quarterly and annual payroll tax returns.

    • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local payroll regulations.

  • Budgeting & Financial Planning:

    • Lead the budgeting process, working closely with department heads and the Executive Director to create and manage the annual budget.

    • Monitor actual expenses and revenues against the budget and provide variance analysis.

    • Assist with long-term financial planning, ensuring alignment with the organization’s strategic goals.

  • Audit & Compliance:

    • Assist with the preparation and coordination of annual audits, working closely with external auditors to provide necessary documentation.

    • Ensure compliance with IRS 501(c)(3) regulations and all applicable federal, state, and local laws.

    • Develop and maintain internal control policies and procedures to safeguard assets.

  • Financial Reporting & Analysis:

    • Prepare and present regular financial reports to the Executive Director, Board of Directors, and other stakeholders.

    • Analyze financial data and trends to provide actionable insights that support decision-making.

    • Support grant management and reporting requirements, ensuring compliance with funders’ guidelines.

  • Team Collaboration & Leadership:

    • Manage and mentor a small team of accounting staff, providing training, guidance, and performance evaluations.

    • Work closely with other departments to ensure smooth financial operations and address any concerns or questions regarding financial matters.

    • Stay up-to-date with nonprofit accounting best practices and regulatory changes.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (CPA or CMA preferred).

  • Minimum of 5 years of accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a nonprofit environment.

  • Strong knowledge of full-cycle accounting, payroll, budgeting, and financial reporting.

  • Experience with nonprofit financial management, including compliance with 501(c)(3) regulations.

  • Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Microsoft Dynamics, or similar) and Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel.

  • Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain financial concepts to non-financial stakeholders.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
