Accounting Manager

Job Summary:
The Nonprofit Accounting Manager is responsible for overseeing and managing the day-to-day accounting operations of the organization, including AP, AR, payroll, and other financial functions. This role ensures that financial records are accurate, compliant with accounting standards, and aligned with the organization’s mission. The Accounting Manager will utilize Blackbaud software to manage financial transactions, generate reports, and provide strategic insights into the organization’s financial health.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Accounts Payable (AP):

    • Manage and oversee the AP process, ensuring the accurate and timely processing of invoices and payments.

    • Develop and maintain relationships with vendors and suppliers.

    • Ensure that all payments are coded correctly and in compliance with the organization’s budget and policies.

    • Monitor cash flow and maintain records of all outstanding liabilities.

  • Accounts Receivable (AR):

    • Oversee and manage the AR process, including tracking donations, grants, and other receivables.

    • Ensure accurate and timely posting of donations and other revenue sources.

    • Manage donor accounts, including the tracking of pledges and payments.

    • Reconcile AR accounts regularly and work with the fundraising team to resolve discrepancies.

  • Payroll Management:

    • Oversee and ensure the accurate and timely processing of bi-weekly payroll for all employees.

    • Ensure proper deductions and benefits are applied, and maintain accurate payroll records.

    • Collaborate with HR to ensure compliance with labor laws and tax regulations.

    • Prepare payroll-related reports and tax filings as needed.

  • Blackbaud Software Management:

    • Manage financial transactions and maintain records using Blackbaud Financial Edge and Blackbaud Raiser’s Edge (or other relevant Blackbaud software).

    • Generate accurate and timely financial reports using Blackbaud software for internal use, budgeting, and donor stewardship.

    • Troubleshoot and resolve any issues related to Blackbaud software, ensuring smooth operation of accounting functions.

    • Collaborate with IT or Blackbaud support for advanced technical issues as necessary.

  • Accounting Oversight & Support:

    • Manage month-end and year-end closing processes, ensuring timely and accurate financial reporting.

    • Assist with the preparation of financial statements and support the audit process.

    • Ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards, tax regulations, and donor restrictions.

    • Provide financial analysis, forecasts, and recommendations to senior leadership.

    • Assist with budget preparation and variance analysis.

  • Team Leadership & Supervision:

    • Supervise, mentor, and develop accounting staff, providing training and support as needed.

    • Foster a collaborative and productive work environment, ensuring that accounting functions are efficiently and effectively managed.

    • Participate in strategic planning and budgeting processes.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.

  • 5+ years of experience in accounting, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or managerial role, preferably in a nonprofit setting.

  • Strong knowledge and experience using Blackbaud Financial Edge, Raiser’s Edge, or other Blackbaud software.

  • In-depth knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles, financial reporting, and regulatory compliance.

  • Proven experience with managing accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with staff, leadership, and external stakeholders.

  • Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to managing financial processes.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other accounting software.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • CPA or other professional accounting certification.

  • Knowledge of nonprofit tax laws and financial compliance regulations.

  • Experience managing grants and restricted funds.

  • Experience with budgeting and financial forecasting.
