Responsibilities
- The Mold Shop Lead coordinates the daily activities of all staff comprised of Machinists and Programmer-Machinists
- They prioritize workload, provide training, manage raw material ordering, and are responsible for the work order process
- The Mold Shop Lead works alongside all associates, responsible for programming, setting up and operating conventional, special purpose, and Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines and machining centers to fabricate metallic and nonmetallic parts

- Generates machine programs for 2-3 and 5-axis machining centers, including complex mold cavity surfaces
- Verifies work using precision measuring tools (e.g., micrometers, calipers, height gauges, bore gauges, and CMMs) to ensure parts meet strict tolerances
- Optimizes machining processes for increased efficiency, reduced cycle times, and minimized material waste
- Sets up and operates machining tools such as lathes, milling machines, and grinders to machine parts and verifies conformance of machined parts to specifications
- Uses hand tools for venting, polishing and sharpening hi-die knives
- Uses knowledge of quality control techniques, including Statistical Process Control (SPC) and root cause analysis, to resolve defects
- Able to evaluate blueprints, sketches, drawings, or sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work piece, sequence of operations, and setup requirements
- Confers with engineers, production personnel, programmers or others to resolve machining assembly problems
- Leads maintenance practices for manual and CNC machines to ensure optimal performance and prevent breakdowns
- Builds and repairs molds from prints or verbal instructions
- Uses Lean Manufacturing principles or Six Sigma methodologies to improve efficiency, reduce waste, and streamline mold manufacturing processes
- Estimates time requirements for completion of job assignments and assists in the formulation and prioritization of the Tool Room schedule in order to satisfy project timelines
- Leads the preventive maintenance schedule for Tool Room equipment
- Manages the procurement and inventory of raw materials, tooling components, and equipment spare/replacement parts
- Comply with the EH&S Policy and applicable regulatory and company EH&S rules and requirements
- Report to supervision conditions or practices that are either unsafe or that may adversely impact the environment, to ensure prompt resolution of potential hazards
- Attend scheduled EH&S training program
- Actively support the organization’s efforts to meet or exceed EH&S goals and plans
- Follows Product Safety and Quality standards
- Follows GMP’s in regard to food contact packaging as it pertains to the employee
- Follows IPC product defense standards and complies with all SQF requirements
Requirement’s
Minimum Requirements (include education, experience, special skills, licenses and/or certifications required.) The list below represents the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. • High school diploma, general education degree (GED), vocational school education, state certified Machinist or Toolmaker, or minimum of 10 years’ experience in a machine shop.
• At least 7 years’ experience working with CNC machines, with at least 5 years CNC programming; use of MasterCam software strongly preferred.
• Skilled in 3D solid modeling software, Solidworks experience preferred.
• Ability to work with mathematical fundamentals of shop math; geometry and trigonometry.
• Industry-related experience, including knowledge of thermoforming and machining of aluminum castings (molds), is preferred.
• Prior supervisory experience or demonstrated management skills.
• Knowledge and use of Lean Six Sigma tools, Green Belt preferred.
