Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Controller with a strong background in construction accounting and finance. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience managing full-cycle accounting, construction billing (AIA format), project accounting, and construction payroll. This role will oversee all day-to-day accounting operations and provide financial leadership to support business growth and operational excellence.
Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee full-cycle accounting including AP, AR, GL, job costing, and financial statement preparation.
  • Manage project accounting functions, including job cost tracking, WIP schedules, and cost-to-complete analysis.
  • Handle AIA billing and ensure accuracy and timeliness of all project invoicing.
  • Process and manage construction payroll, including certified payroll reporting and union/non-union requirements as applicable.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP and internal financial policies.
  • Prepare and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Maintain and reconcile balance sheets, income statements, and job cost reports.
  • Lead budget preparation, cash flow forecasting, and variance analysis.
  • Collaborate with project managers and operations to ensure accurate job costing and financial performance tracking.
  • Coordinate annual audit and tax preparation with external accountants.
  • Develop and implement process improvements to enhance accuracy, efficiency, and internal controls.

Qualifications

  • Construction industry accounting experience is REQUIRED.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (preferred but not required).
  • Strong understanding of full-cycle accounting including billing (AIA), project accounting, and cost management.
  • Construction payroll experience is a MUST, including certified payroll and multi-state or union environments.
  • Proficient in Excel (advanced skills required) — ability to create complex spreadsheets, pivot tables, and financial models.
  • Experience with construction accounting software (e.g., Sage 300, Foundation, Viewpoint, QuickBooks Contractor, etc.) a plus.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Proven ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple priorities.
