The Controller is an integral part of the Business Office and is responsible for all accounting activities. Responsible for management of the general ledger accounting system, ensuring accounts are maintained in accordance with GAAP, proper internal controls are in place, a timely month-end close, and all appropriate general ledger accounts are properly reconciled. Job Responsibilities
As the School’s Controller, you will be responsible for management of the general ledger accounting system, ensuring accounts are maintained in accordance with GAAP, proper internal controls are in place, a timely month-end close, and all appropriate general ledger accounts are properly reconciled. Ideal candidates will have experience with non-profit accounting, general ledgers, and financial statement audits. The role reports to the Chief Financial Officer.
Job specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Ensure accurate posting of entries to general ledger according to GAAP.
  • Oversee accounts payable and accounts receivable posting and reporting to ensure timely, accurate information.
  • Facilitate timely monthly close, review and prepare financial reports ensuring budget variances properly investigated.
  • Prepare worksheets and files as needed for annual audit.
  • Assist CFO with budgeting and forecasting.
  • Payroll: Input, reconcile and ensure timely distribution of payroll. Remit appropriate Federal and State tax withholding and other filings as needed. Ensure timely production of W-2’s, 1099’s, etc.
  • Retirement Plan Administration: Maintain employee contribution records, sync with payroll, manage loans and periodic reporting, including audit and filing.
  • Cash Management: Account for all cash accounts, including monthly reconciliations.
  • Petty Cash: Ensure sufficient cash levels and account for cash advances and expenses.
  • Investment Accounts: Maintain records and reconcile all investment activities and ensure proper accounting.
  • Personnel: Maintain contracts, work authorization materials and benefits enrollment for all employees.
  • Student Spending Account: Oversee student spending account entries and ensure proper documentation for posted expenses.
  • File reports and information as needed to get reimbursed under the National School Lunch Program.

Essential Skills

  • Detail-oriented with extensive accounting experience.
  • Professionally personable and approachable.
  • Extensive experience with cloud-based accounting systems. Microsoft Office proficiency, especially Excel.
  • Experience working with senior administrators, maintaining the requisite demeanor and confidentiality.
  • Experience working with auditors and facilitating annual audits and tax filings.

Preferred Skills

  • 5+ years of overall accounting and finance experience at the senior, supervisor, or manager level.
  • Experience in education, e.g., private, public or charter schools, colleges or vocational schools.
  • Additional IT proficiency such as downloading/uploading data, merging files and experience with report writing tools, specific HRIS systems, etc.
  • Adept in working with IT vendors to articulate issues and assist in troubleshooting problems.

Qualifications & Education

  • Degree: Bachelor’s degree in accounting required.
  • Accounting: Highly experienced in accounting processes, reconciliation, and report and statement production.
  • Information Technology: Experienced in accounting, HR and office administrative systems.
  • Self-motivated, organized, able to prioritize workflow, meet deadlines and independently complete tasks

Schedule

This is a full-time position and requires the employee to be on site (not remote).
