Controller

Position Overview:
The Controller will be responsible for overseeing all accounting functions, ensuring accurate financial reporting, and maintaining compliance with all applicable regulations within the school system. This individual must have extensive experience with the BANNER system, particularly in the context of higher education or K-12 public school systems. The Controller will work closely with senior leadership to prepare financial statements, budgets, and forecasts while implementing effective internal controls to safeguard financial resources.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Financial Reporting & Oversight:
2. Prepare and oversee the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
3. Ensure all transactions are recorded in compliance with school system policies and GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles).
4. Review and analyze variances in financial reports and recommend corrective actions.

5. BANNER System Management:
6. Utilize the BANNER ERP system for daily financial transactions, including journal entries, account reconciliations, and reporting.
7. Work closely with the IT and/or ERP support teams to maintain data integrity within BANNER.
8. Support system upgrades and enhancements as needed to optimize use of BANNER for financial processes.

9. Budgeting & Forecasting:
10. Assist in the preparation of annual budgets and forecasts.
11. Provide guidance and insights into financial data, aiding the decision-making process for strategic planning.

12. Internal Controls & Compliance:
13. Ensure internal controls are in place to minimize risk and fraud.
14. Monitor compliance with state, federal, and local regulations affecting financial operations.
15. Work with auditors during the annual audit process and provide necessary documentation.

16. Supervision and Team Management:
17. Lead and manage the accounting team, providing mentorship and guidance as needed.
18. Promote a collaborative team environment while maintaining high standards of financial accuracy.

19. Financial Analysis and Strategic Support:
20. Provide regular financial analysis and reporting to leadership, ensuring timely and accurate insights.
21. Support decision-making by providing financial data and analysis on a variety of projects and initiatives.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (Master’s preferred).
• Minimum of 5 years of experience in accounting or financial management, with at least 2 years in a school system or higher education setting.
• Extensive hands-on experience with BANNER ERP system (including finance modules).
• Strong understanding of GAAP, fund accounting, and financial reporting for educational institutions.
• Proven ability to prepare complex financial statements and reports.
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to explain complex financial information to non-financial stakeholders.
• Strong leadership and team management skills.
• Proficient in Microsoft Excel and other accounting software.

Preferred Qualifications:

• CPA designation.
• Knowledge of state and federal regulations governing educational institutions.
• Experience with financial analysis and forecasting in an educational environment.
• Familiarity with automated financial systems and budgeting tools beyond BANNER.
