Controller

Position Summary:
We are looking for a strategic, detail-oriented Controller to oversee the financial operations of the institution, including general ledger management, audit preparation, financial reporting, and payroll administration. The Controller will play a critical role in ensuring financial integrity, compliance with all regulatory requirements, and efficient operation of business office functions.
This position is ideal for a seasoned accounting professional with nonprofit or educational experience and deep familiarity with audit processes and payroll systems, particularly ADP.


Key Responsibilities:
Financial Oversight & Reporting

  • Manage day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger, month-end and year-end closings.
  • Prepare timely and accurate financial statements and management reports.
  • Monitor cash flow, budgets, and forecasting models.
  • Ensure proper internal controls and compliance with GAAP and institutional policies.

Audit & Compliance

  • Serve as primary liaison with external auditors and lead the annual audit process.
  • Prepare all audit schedules, reports, and reconciliations.
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local financial regulations.
  • Support the preparation of IRS Form 990 and other filings.

Payroll & Benefits Administration

  • Oversee payroll processing and related reporting, preferably using ADP Workforce Now or similar platforms.
  • Maintain accurate records of employee compensation, deductions, and benefits.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable labor laws and benefits regulations.
  • Liaise with HR to coordinate payroll and benefits data.

Team Leadership & Collaboration

  • Supervise accounting or business office staff as applicable.
  • Collaborate with departmental heads and school leaders on budget planning and financial matters.
  • Provide financial guidance and training to non-finance staff as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA or MBA preferred).
  • Minimum of 5–7 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in a school, nonprofit, or similar institutional setting.
  • Experience managing audits and working with independent auditors.
  • Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Blackbaud, or similar).
  • Strong knowledge of payroll systems, with preference for ADP experience.
  • Familiarity with nonprofit accounting standards, restricted funds, and grant reporting.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and communication skills.
  • High ethical standards, discretion, and attention to confidentiality.

Preferred Attributes:

  • Experience in K-12, boarding, or higher education institutions.
  • Familiarity with tuition billing, student accounts, and fundraising accounting.
  • Hands-on, collaborative, and mission-driven approach.
  • Adaptability in fast-paced environments and ability to prioritize competing demands.
