Position Summary:
We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Financial Controller to oversee the organization’s accounting operations and ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) standards. The ideal candidate will have a solid background in nonprofit financial management, strong internal control knowledge, and a passion for advancing the organization’s mission through sound financial stewardship.
Key Responsibilities:
Financial Management & Reporting

  • Lead the annual budgeting process in collaboration with department heads and executive leadership.
  • Provide financial forecasting and strategic planning support to guide decision-making.
  • Track restricted and unrestricted funds, grants, and program-specific financial performance.
  • Prepare timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with U.S. GAAP.
  • Monitor and report on financial performance, variances, and key metrics to executive leadership and board members.
  • Lead annual audit process, including preparing schedules and liaising with external auditors.
  • Manage and ensure accurate reconciliation of all balance sheet accounts.

Internal Controls & Compliance

  • Design, implement, and monitor effective internal control systems in accordance with SOX and organizational policies.
  • Maintain compliance with relevant federal, state, and local regulations, as well as nonprofit-specific accounting requirements.
  • Develop and document accounting policies and procedures to ensure consistency and transparency.

Team Leadership & Collaboration

  • Supervise and mentor a team of accounting staff or external accounting service providers.
  • Serve as a key partner to program directors, development staff, and external stakeholders.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, accuracy, and continuous improvement within the finance team.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA preferred).
  • 7+ years of progressive accounting/finance experience, including 3+ years in a leadership or controller role.
  • Nonprofit accounting experience required, including fund accounting and grant tracking.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and SOX compliance.
  • Experience with nonprofit audit processes, 990 filings, and restricted/unrestricted fund tracking.
  • Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., Great Plains, Blackbaud, QuickBooks, NetSuite, Sage Intacct) and advanced Excel skills.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • CPA certification.
  • Experience working in a mission-driven or community-based organization.
  • Familiarity with donor management systems and grant compliance requirements.
