Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Controller with a strong background in construction accounting to lead and manage all accounting operations. This role will oversee the full-cycle accounting function, ensure accurate project financial reporting, and drive process improvements through ERP and systems optimization.
The ideal candidate brings deep experience in construction financial management, job costing, percentage-of-completion accounting, and ERP systems implementation, and thrives in a fast-paced, project-based environment.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Management & Reporting
- Lead and manage the full-cycle accounting process, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and month-end close.
- Prepare timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
- Maintain strong internal controls and ensure compliance with accounting standards and company policies.
- Manage cash flow forecasting and working capital planning.
Construction Accounting
- Oversee job costing and project accounting, ensuring accurate cost tracking and reporting.
- Monitor Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules and percentage-of-completion (POC) revenue recognition.
- Collaborate with project managers to review budgets, cost projections, and job profitability.
- Manage change orders, retainage tracking, and subcontractor payment processes.
- Ensure compliance with industry requirements including lien waivers, contract accounting, and project reporting.
Systems & Process Improvement
- Lead or support ERP system implementations, upgrades, or integrations.
- Optimize accounting workflows through automation and process improvements.
- Develop and maintain financial dashboards and reporting tools.
- Partner with leadership to improve data visibility and operational reporting.
Leadership & Team Management
- Manage and mentor accounting staff.
- Establish best practices and scalable accounting processes.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with operations, project management, and executive leadership.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- 8+ years of accounting experience, with significant experience in the construction industry.
- Strong knowledge of:
- Construction job costing
- WIP reporting
- Percentage-of-completion accounting
- Project financial management
- Experience managing the full accounting cycle and month-end close.
- Experience with construction accounting software or ERP systems.
Preferred
- CPA or CMA designation.
- Experience with construction ERP platforms such as Viewpoint, Sage 300 CRE, Foundation, CMiC, or NetSuite.
- Experience leading or supporting ERP implementations or major system upgrades.
- Advanced Excel and financial modeling skills.
