Dental Assistant – Community Health Center

Location: Jackson Heights, NY 
Pay: $23 – $25 DOE  
Schedule: Monday to Friday, 9-5:30

  • 30 minute unpaid lunch break
  • Late clinic hours Weds and Thurs
  • candidates must work on late night a week
  • can either work adjusted hours or take the overtime (9a-7p)

Position Summary :
The Dental Assistant (DA) supports dental care delivery by preparing treatment room, patient, instruments, and materials; passing instruments and materials; performing procedures in compliance with the dental practice.
Perform a variety of chairside and clinical/ laboratory support functions. Prepare treatment operatory, position instruments and equipment. Monitor patient comfort. Assist in maintaining treatment records and maintaining operatory equipment and instruments. Responsible for the sterilization, preparation and inventory control of dental instruments and supplies.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • Completion of an accredited New York dental assisting program by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association or one (1) year of clinical work dental assisting required
    • CDA certification required
    • RDA a plus 
  • Basic CPR (BLS) Certification
  • Experience in hospital or community health center preferred
  • Bilingual preferred (Spanish, Asian language, Urdu)
  • Knowledge of Medical/Dental Software preferred.
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos.
  • Ability to communicate dental procedures and terminology with dental team and patient.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form
  • Engaged in learning and continuous quality improvement.
  • Excellent customer service skills are required

Duties and Responsibilities include:
Administrative Skills:

  • Takes and records medical and dental histories of patients.
  • Facilitates related services for health center clients as appropriate with respect to their confidentiality and privacy.
  • Instructs patients in oral hygiene and plaque control programs.
  • Schedules appointments, generates and closes encounters, prepares bills and receives payment for dental services, completes insurance forms, and maintains clerical records.
  • Alerts the Director of Dental Services or designee of malfunctioning equipment.
  • Calls laboratory to pick up denture cases.
  • Logs in denture cases delivered to the clinic by the lab.
  • Answers telephone in dental suite and takes messages while dentist is treating.
  • Helps obtain “Time Out” and “Consent” of necessary patients
  • Means and ability to travel between clinics.
  • Performs other related duties, as assigned.

Dentistry Skills:

  • Prepares patient and patient room for dentist’s examination and treatment.
  • Sterilizes, disinfects, and disposes of any operatory and instruments and/or materials adhering to OSHA guidelines for a safe work environment.
  • Prepares materials and assists dentist during dental procedures.
  • Utilizes four-handed dentistry techniques to prepare and dispense materials chair side and assist the dental provider(s).
  • Takes and records vitals with medical and dental histories of patients.
  • Exposes and develops and mounts dental diagnostic radiographs as delegated and directed by the Dentist in accordance with state regulation and law and department directive and protocol.
  • Pours, trims and polishes study casts.
  • Assists dentist in management with all dental procedures, i.e. emergencies, oral surgery, prosthetic and restorative procedures.
  • Maintains and monitors dental equipment, inventory: ordering, distribution of stock, and storage.

Compliance

  • Performs all functions in full compliance with the health center and the department’s Exposure Control Plan including but not limited to the use of Personal Protective Equipment and Universal Precautions.
  • Professionally assists patient care in line with the organization’s mission and goals, while upholding HIPAA policies.
