Finance Director/Town Accountant

Full Job Description
The Town is seeking a highly experienced municipal finance professional to serve as its next Finance Director/Town Accountant. This position requires advanced knowledge of Massachusetts municipal finance and the demonstrated ability to assume full statutory responsibilities immediately.
The Finance Director oversees Accounting, Treasury, Collections, and Assessing; ensures compliance with Massachusetts General Laws, by-laws, DOR regulations, and GASB standards; and leads budget development, financial reporting, capital planning, and long-term fiscal strategy for Town and School operations. Lunenburg maintains an AA+ bond rating and a $49M annual operating budget.
 
Minimum Requirements (Applicants must clearly meet all):

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or closely related field; Master’s degree preferred.
  • At least 5–7 years of substantial municipal or public-sector financial management experience. Private-sector-only experience is not sufficient.
  • Demonstrated expertise in Massachusetts municipal finance, including fund accounting, budget development, and statutory compliance.
  • Supervisory experience and a proven ability to manage complex municipal financial operations.
  • Experience with MUNIS/Tyler Technologies strongly desired.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior service as a Finance Director, Town Accountant, Assistant Town Accountant, Treasurer/Collector, or equivalent municipal leadership role.
  • Experience preparing for and managing annual audits, forecasting revenues, and developing multi-year financial plans.

Salary & Benefits
$125,000–$145,000 DOQ, plus comprehensive benefits. Recruitment incentives and flexible scheduling may be available for exceptionally qualified candidates.
