Description:   We are working with a Law Firm client in Boston who is looking for a Litigation Paralegal for a 6-month contract, on a hybrid basis.

Job Description

The paralegal will provide a broad spectrum of legal services under the supervision of attorneys and across the entire litigation process.  The paralegal will aid attorneys not only in the litigation department of our Boston office, but also litigators in our New York and D.C. offices as necessary and appropriate.  In addition, the paralegal will also aid attorneys within our tax litigation practice group or other departments or practices groups on litigation related matters as well.

Duties and responsibilities

The paralegal is responsible for aiding attorneys by performing a variety of tasks including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Motion Practice
  • Coordination of the filing of complaints and the service of summonses.
  • Docket and calendar court deadlines using the Court Alert docket system.
  • Assistance with the preparation of pleadings and court filings in federal and state courts as well as other forums such as with arbitrations and mediations. 
  • Perform legal cite-checks as well as proofreading legal briefs; perform checks of pleadings for conformity with the respective local court rules.
  • Perform the filing of court papers electronically, such as, for example, with the Federal CM/ECF court filing system, or in person.
  • Assistance in court as necessary along with attorneys.

·  Discovery and Related Analysis
·  Assistance with drafting and organizing discovery papers such as with subpoenas and deposition notices.
·  Assistance with the organization, analysis and review of discovery documents for use in document productions, depositions, or as exhibits to legal briefs.
·  Coordination with service providers such as for the service of process of subpoenas or with court stenographers for depositions.
·  Trial and Appeal
·  Assist with the organization of trial exhibits and designation of deposition testimony.
·  Assistance in court as necessary includes the management of and use of trial presentation technology.
·  Responsible for the knowledge of appellate court rules and procedures; relevant dates and times of filings; formatting requirements of legal briefs and appendices.

Qualifications
 

  • Bachelor’s degree required.  Paralegal certificate appreciated.
  • At least two years of litigation experience, preferably at a law firm.
  • A good understanding of the litigation process, the federal and state court system, relevant electronic filing systems, and the rules of civil and appellate procedures.
  • Proficiency with legal citation using The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills as well as inter-personal skills.
  • Ability to take initiative; organize and prioritize case workload; ability to multi-task effectively and meet deadlines for multiple attorneys; ability to work independently and be flexible as part of a team.
  • Work effectively, calmly, and quickly while under pressure.
  • Strong technical skills, including the Microsoft Office Suite of applications in addition to familiarity with specialized litigation software such as with Court Alert for docketing and Relativity for discovery management.
