Ophthalmic Technician

Pay: $18-22/hour, based on experience

Schedule: Monday through Thursday 7AM – 5PM

Requirements: 

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required
  • Completion of Ophthalmic Technician classes/certification is preferred
  • 1+ year of Ophthalmic Technician experience 

Responsibilities:

Ophthalmic Technician performs tasks that the eye doctor can delegate to assist the physician in diagnosing and treating the patient. Here is a list of common tasks performed by the Ophthalmic Technician:

  • Assist in the delivery of primary health care and patient management
  • Perform measurements and tests that provide the doctor with information needed to arrive at a diagnosis and to prescribe treatment
  • Assist with electronic medical documentation
  • Assist with patient services
  • History taking
  • Visual acuity measurement
  • Tonometry (measure eye pressure)
  • Measure pupil size and reactivity
  • Test and measure eye muscle function
  • Visual field testing
  • Corneal thickness measurement
  • Corneal topography
  • Retinal thickness and topography
  • Prepare for and assist with in-office procedures
  • Surgical assisting
  • Scribe
  • Office cleaning
  • All pre-testing that is needed for patient work up
  • Assist doctor when needed

Performance Requirements:

  • Ability and knowledge to perform medical assistant care
  • Knowledge of examination, diagnostic, and treatment room procedures
  • Knowledge of medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations
  • Ability to interpret, adapt, and apply guidelines and procedures
  • Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment
  • Skill in assisting in a variety of treatments and medications as directed
  • Skill in taking vital signs
  • Skill in maintaining records and recording test results
  • Skill in developing and maintaining department quality assurance
  • Ability to cross train in patient check-in/check-out, benefits verification, collections of co-pay/co-insurance, and scheduling
  • Knowledge of electronic medical records, data entry, and telephone systems
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with physicians, patients, employees, and the public
  • Possess good written and verbal communication skills
  • Always presents a professional image
  • Ability to do detailed and accurate work
  • Utilize time management skills
  • Answer telephone in a professional manner
  • Read, understand, and follow oral and written instructions
  • Recognize, evaluate, solve problems, and correct errors
