Project Accountant

Published February 4th, 2026

CSS has partnered with a well-established, family-oriented commercial construction subcontractor in New England to identify a talented Project Accountant.

This respected company, with over 100 years of history in the region’s commercial subcontracting sector, specializes in divisions including drywall, acoustical ceilings, painting, electrical, mechanical, and specialty interior finish products. It is renowned for its strong family culture and consistent high performance on projects.

The Project Accountant will report directly to the COO and take ownership of financial operations tied to all projects. This includes cash management, accounts payable, contract billings, and job cost reporting. This is a hybrid flexible position with a blend of remote and onsite work.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Assisting with the transition from the current CF Data system to Viewpoint Spectrum (a major initiative).
  • Maintaining project and general ledger accounting in Viewpoint Spectrum once implemented.
  • Supporting the consolidation of outside divisions into a centralized accounting process.
  • Managing project-related records (contracts, change orders), preparing financial reports and analyses, and providing recommendations to improve project performance.
  • Reviewing and approving vendor/subcontractor invoices, ensuring accurate cost coding.
  • Overseeing subcontractor compliance per contract terms.
  • Investigating variances and discrepancies in contract billing, budget-to-actual reports, time approvals, and unbilled project costs.
  • Closing out project accounts upon completion.
  • Serving as the key liaison between project management and accounting teams for information requests and reporting.
  • Assisting with ERP automation tools and cross-platform integrations.
  • Compiling information and reports for the CFO, President, and Board as needed.

Required qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business, Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Strong knowledge of project contracts and change order documentation.
  • Excellent communication and analytical skills.
  • At least 3 years of experience in project accounting within the construction industry.
  • MUST HAVE hands-on experience and detailed knowledge of Viewpoint Spectrum software — this is a non-negotiable requirement for the role.
  • Experience with systems implementation (e.g., ERP transitions) is a plus.

This is an excellent opportunity to join a stable, high-performing organization with a collaborative culture, while playing a pivotal role in modernizing their financial systems.
