Senior Accountant

Job Summary:
The Senior Accountant will play a critical role in managing the financial aspects of our nonprofit’s grants and contracts. This position requires expertise in grants and contracts accounting, meticulous attention to detail, and a passion for supporting our mission through sound financial stewardship. Reporting to the [Finance Director/Controller], this role will ensure compliance with funding requirements and provide accurate financial reporting to internal and external stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the full cycle of grants and contracts accounting, including budgeting, tracking, invoicing, and reporting.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and private funding regulations, including grant-specific guidelines and contract terms.
  • Prepare and submit financial reports to grantors and contractors in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Monitor grant and contract expenditures to ensure alignment with approved budgets and allowable costs.
  • Collaborate with program staff to develop grant budgets and provide financial guidance during proposal development.
  • Reconcile grant and contract accounts, identifying and resolving discrepancies.
  • Maintain detailed documentation for audits and assist with annual audit preparation related to grants and contracts.
  • Process invoices, expense reimbursements, and revenue recognition for restricted and unrestricted funds.
  • Support month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring accurate allocation of funds.
  • Stay updated on nonprofit accounting standards, including GAAP and relevant compliance requirements.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in grants and contracts accounting, preferably in a nonprofit environment.
  • Strong understanding of nonprofit financial management, including restricted fund accounting.
  • Proficiency in accounting software (Sage Intact, or similar) and Microsoft Excel.
  • Knowledge of federal grant regulations (e.g., Uniform Guidance) and experience with government contracts is a plus.
  • Exceptional analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to communicate financial information clearly to non-financial team members.
