Position Summary
We are seeking a hands-on Senior Accountant to join our nonprofit organization and support the accounting department. This role is responsible for managing accounting operations with a strong emphasis on nonprofit accounting, grant management, and audit support. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, collaborative, and comfortable owning the full accounting cycle in a mission-driven environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage full-cycle accounting from transaction processing through month-end and year-end close
- Perform general ledger maintenance, journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial reporting
- Oversee grant accounting, including tracking restricted and unrestricted funds, grant compliance, and reporting
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP and nonprofit standards
- Support and participate in the annual audit, including preparing schedules, documentation, and responding to auditor requests
- Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management
- Ensure compliance with nonprofit regulations, internal controls, and organizational policies
- Collaborate closely with leadership and program staff to provide accurate financial insights
- Contribute to process improvements and accounting best practices in a small-team environment
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
- 5–10 years of accounting experience, preferably within a nonprofit organization
- Strong understanding of nonprofit accounting principles and grant-related financial management
- Experience with full-cycle accounting in a small or lean department
- Exposure to audits with the confidence to actively participate
- Experience with QuickBooks Online is a plus, but not required
- Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to manage multiple priorities
- Excellent communication skills and a collaborative mindset
Preferred Skills
- Comfort wearing multiple hats and taking ownership of accounting processes
- CPA or progress toward certification is a plus, but not required
