Senior Manager – Information Governance

Summary

The Sr. Manager – Information Governance is responsible for assisting the Director of Records Management to formulate strategy and develop initiatives to implement leading practices and evolve processes needed to ensure that the business value and visibility of the firm’s information are maximized, while the risks and cost of information are minimized.

The Sr. Manager – Information Governance will collaborate with key stakeholders, peer departments, firm committees, or practice groups to design, develop and ultimately promulgate practical, commonsense information governance (IG) policies, processes, solutions and services to ensure timely and accurate classification, access restrictions, protection, retention and disposition of firm information or client information held by the firm.

Additionally, the Sr. Manager – Information Governance will assess the firm’s compliance with ethical, legal, regulatory, contractual and operational requirements for the governance of firm and client information and to identify opportunities for policy refinement and control enhancement.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the Director to develop and oversee the implementation of a strategic program, leading practices and methodologies to support the management of firm and client information.
  • Advise on operational and compliance responsibilities relating to the lifecycle management of client and administrative records. Oversee the maintenance of a systematic, methodical, and legally defensible practice to discard unneeded information.
  • Work with firm administration and practice groups to identify business requirements to automate information governance processes.
  • Support global project team to address policy questions and help interpret and outline effective information governance practices.
  • Serve as a champion of current and potential capabilities of NetDocuments (NetDocs), the Firm’s document management system. Led efforts to drive the adoption and evolution of NetDocs and its related applications.
  • Assist with NetDocs cabinet administration and other support activities required for a mission-critical application.
  • Provide high-touch service for lawyers to resolve NetDocs inquiries and issues.
  • Define and promote processes and procedures to improve the performance and stability of NetDocuments and integrated third-party applications.
  • Coach, mentor and develop firm peers to become aware of and compliant with firm information governance policies.
  • Strong ability to develop and/or execute on strategic direction and objectives.
  • Provide advice and propose solutions for complex and/or technical information governance and/or information technology issues.
  • Responsible for program for securing information to comply with ethical and confidential screens as required to satisfy client or regulatory requirements.
  • Responsible for ensuring that records subject to an Office of General Counsel document hold are identified, preserved, collected and released.
  • Track key performance indicators and prepare status reports for the Director that measure the state of the firm’s effectiveness at managing information.

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience: 

Required:

  • College degree or equivalent in position-related educational courses and seminars
  • Minimum of ten years records management, information governance, compliance, security or related experience, with minimum of five years managerial experience.
  • Minimum of five years of hands-on experience delivering process, operational, technical improvements to address process gaps, mitigate risks, and eliminate inefficiencies with how information is acquired, used, stored, retained and disposed
  • Proficient in technical writing and creation of policies, standards, procedures and guidelines
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft PowerPoint.

Preferred:

  • Understanding of data privacy and IT security control methodologies
  • Professional designation as an Information Governance Professional (IGP), Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP), Certified Records Manager (CRM) or similar certification. 
  • Proficient in records or content management applications such as iManage or LegalKEY Records Management
  • Strong knowledge of NetDocuments functionality, including security
