Position Overview:
We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Nonprofit Accountant with experience using Abila MIP (formerly Sage MIP Fund Accounting) software to join our finance team. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of nonprofit accounting principles, financial reporting, and fund management. This role is responsible for managing day-to-day accounting functions, including financial transactions, budgeting, reconciliations, and monthly/annual reporting. The Nonprofit Accountant will work closely with other departments to ensure accurate and timely financial data, while maintaining compliance with nonprofit regulations and accounting standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Accounting & Financial Management:
- Process and record daily financial transactions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and journal entries.
- Reconcile balance sheet accounts, including bank accounts, accounts receivable, and accounts payable, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
- Assist with month-end and year-end closing processes to ensure financial reports are accurate and completed on time.
- Prepare and maintain accurate general ledger entries and reports.
- Support the preparation of the organization’s annual budget and assist with budget tracking throughout the year.
Abila MIP Fund Accounting:
- Utilize Abila MIP Fund Accounting software to manage all aspects of nonprofit accounting, including fund management, grants, and program tracking.
- Prepare financial statements, including Statement of Financial Position, Statement of Activities, and Cash Flow Statement, ensuring proper allocation of funds across different grants and programs.
- Generate financial reports from Abila MIP for management, ensuring the reports are tailored to reflect the unique needs of a nonprofit organization.
- Troubleshoot and resolve any issues related to Abila MIP to ensure the system is functioning effectively for day-to-day accounting tasks.
Compliance & Reporting:
- Ensure that all accounting activities comply with nonprofit accounting standards, GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles), and any applicable regulatory requirements.
- Assist in the preparation of materials for the annual audit, ensuring all financial records are complete and accurate.
- Maintain documentation for fund allocations, donor restrictions, and other reporting needs as required by funders and regulatory bodies.
- Assist in preparing grant and donor reports to ensure that all restricted funds are used appropriately and reported accurately.
Cash Management:
- Monitor and manage cash flow to ensure the organization has sufficient liquidity to meet financial obligations.
- Prepare and analyze cash projections to provide leadership with accurate, timely information about available funds.
- Assist with banking activities, including maintaining relationships with financial institutions and managing bank reconciliations.
Cost Allocation & Program Tracking:
- Track and allocate costs across multiple programs and grants, ensuring proper allocation of expenses to the appropriate funds and categories.
- Assist with the preparation and analysis of program financial statements to ensure financial health and sustainability.
Ad Hoc Reporting & Analysis:
- Assist the finance team with ad hoc financial reporting, analysis, and data extraction from Abila MIP as required by senior leadership.
- Support in preparing financial forecasts and trend analyses to guide decision-making.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA or CMA is a plus).
- 3+ years of experience in nonprofit accounting or fund accounting.
- Hands-on experience with Abila MIP Fund Accounting software is required.
- Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles, including fund accounting, GAAP, and IRS 990 filings.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including advanced features such as pivot tables and VLOOKUP.
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain financial data to non-financial stakeholders.
- Ability to work independently, as well as part of a collaborative team.
- Knowledge of grant compliance and reporting requirements is a plus.
Preferred Skills & Experience:
- CPA or similar certification is preferred.
- Experience working in a nonprofit environment with restricted funds, grants, and donor management.
- Familiarity with nonprofit tax filings and audit preparation.
- Knowledge of other nonprofit financial software platforms (e.g., QuickBooks, Financial Edge) is a plus.
