Staff Accountant

Job Description: The Staff Accountant will play a key role in supporting the accounting functions for a construction company. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of accounting principles and construction-specific accounting practices, including job costing, accounts payable/receivable, and financial reporting. This position requires someone who is proactive, highly organized, and able to handle multiple tasks with precision.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the preparation of monthly financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow reports.
  • Perform job costing and assist with tracking project budgets, expenditures, and revenue recognition for ongoing construction projects.
  • Reconcile general ledger accounts, including construction-related accounts, and ensure accurate financial reporting.
  • Maintain and process accounts payable (AP) and accounts receivable (AR), ensuring accurate coding of expenses and timely invoicing.
  • Assist with payroll processing, including labor cost allocation for construction projects, and ensuring compliance with relevant tax and labor laws.
  • Assist with the preparation of tax returns, including sales tax, and ensure accurate tax filings for the company.
  • Work closely with project managers and operations teams to track project costs, budgets, and forecasts, providing insight on financial performance.
  • Support the annual audit process, preparing necessary documentation and responding to auditor inquiries.
  • Assist with cash management, including monitoring and managing cash flow for ongoing projects.
  • Maintain and organize financial records, ensuring compliance with company policies and industry regulations.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements and help streamline accounting functions to increase efficiency.
  • Prepare ad hoc financial reports as required by senior management.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • 1-3 years of accounting experience, preferably in the construction industry or a related field.
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles and construction-specific accounting practices, including job costing, revenue recognition, and contract accounting.
  • Proficient in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage 100, or similar) and Microsoft Excel.
  • Familiarity with Procore or other construction management software is a plus.
  • Excellent attention to detail with strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with team members, project managers, and other departments.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Basic knowledge of tax regulations, including sales tax and payroll taxes.
