About the Role: Tax Director
We are seeking an experienced Tax Director to oversee and drive compliance with federal, state, and international tax obligations. In this impactful role, you will manage essential tax operations, collaborating with teams across the organization to ensure compliance and support a wide range of tax-related functions. You?ll also lead a small team of tax professionals, fostering a collaborative environment while guiding them in managing diverse tax reporting, compliance, and advisory needs across the organization.
What You?ll Do
- Tax Compliance & Filing: Lead the preparation, review, and filing of all required federal, state, and international tax returns, including forms for institutional tax compliance (e.g., 990, 990T, and international filings).
- Team Leadership: Supervise a tax team of two professionals, providing guidance, mentorship, and professional development.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Coordinate with HR, Payroll Services, Accounts Payable, and university departments on tax-related inquiries, including foreign national payments, worker classification, sales tax, and fringe benefits.
- Policy & Legislative Oversight: Stay current on evolving tax regulations to ensure ongoing compliance, providing proactive insights to leadership on new requirements and their potential impact.
- International and Federal Tax Support: Oversee U.S. income and employment tax reporting for non-resident transactions, including international activity filings and treaty applications, as well as supervise the annual 1042-S process.
- Research & Advisory: Serve as the institution?s go-to expert for federal, state, and international tax research, providing recommendations on new and proposed activities and liaising with tax authorities as needed.
Who You Are
- Experienced: You hold a Bachelor?s degree in accounting, finance, or a related area, along with 8+ years of progressive tax experience; alternatively, a Master?s degree with 6+ years of relevant experience is welcome.
- Leadership-Oriented: With a strong understanding of federal, state, and local tax laws, you?re an effective communicator capable of advising on complex tax matters with clarity.
- Analytical & Detail-Oriented: You bring a meticulous approach to compliance and problem-solving, ensuring accuracy and thoroughness in all aspects of tax management.
- Credentials Preferred: A CPA certification is preferred.
